Philo Fungitopia with Long Meadow Vineyards

The Madrones (map)

Back by popular demand, we’re hosting a mushroom weekend with Flora Jayne, a talented truffle sniffing dog, and her skilled handler, Maria Finn, was so popular that we're bringing them both back for two more weekends this winter.

Maria, author of Forage. Gather. Feast., is an author and chef who creates food and art experiences inspired by wild places. Philo Fungitopia will entail a mushroom forage in woods surrounding a vineyard. You’ll learn to look for and identify delicious mushrooms like porcini and chanterelles and have a tasting with wine.

This is part of a full, fungi-centric food and wine weekend with The Madrones and Long Meadow Ranch. We'll forage for mushrooms on private property and you'll learn about mushroom habitat, ethical foraging, and where and how to find the most delicious mushrooms. We’ll finish up with a hearty, mushroom centric grazing platters featuring mushroom pate, smoked and pickled mushrooms, porcini and fir tip crackers, and pine cone and pine tip embellished cheeses and sample a glass of Long Meadow Ranch wine.

You can join for all the festivities, which includes a mushroom dinner at Wickson Restaurant, a stay at The Madrones and on Sunday, a truffle talk, truffle dog demonstration and truffle - wine tasting with Flora Jayne and I. Or just sign up for one or two parts of the weekend. Participants for BOTH Saturday and Sunday events get 15% off their stay at The Madrones. The Madrones has a minimum stay of two nights.

Note: We will go out foraging rain or shine and do not give refunds. However, if conditions are dangerous, the rain date is February 22nd.

Throughout history truffles been revered, outlawed, inspired skullduggery and eye popping prices. Come learn about this fascinating fungi through a talk, truffle dog demonstration and truffle - wine pairing.

We’ll meet at the tasting room for Long Meadow Vineyards and Maria and her truffle hound, Flora Jayne, will do a truffle hunting demonstration and she’ll explain how she’s been training her dog to find our native truffles in the forest and scout for them on truffle orchards. We'll then have a truffle tasting and wine pairing with Long Meadow Vineyards. Maria will give a talk about the history of truffles and how they so thoroughly seduced humans, as well as their vital roles in the ecosystem and the cultivation of them taking place world-wide.

The truffle smelling and tasting will include different kinds of truffles, like our native Oregon spring white truffles shaved over Pennyroval Farm Reserve Tome, Burgundy truffles with Laychee fresh cheese, Perigord truffle will be shaved over Velvet Sister's creamy sheep cheese. We'll finish with Oregon black- honey truffle panna cotta.

This experience is part of a culinary mushroom weekend. For a full immersion, reserve a room at The Madrones, join us for the mushroom forage on Saturday and make reservations for the multi-course mushroom dinner at the Wickson Restaurant. (Participants for BOTH Saturday and Sunday's events get 15% off their stay at The Madrones).
