Those who visit the rustic elegance of The Madrones’ Mediterranean compound in Anderson Valley can now linger over a casual alfresco meal at the property’s newest addition, Stone & Embers Restaurant.  A wood-burning stove is at the heart of Chef/Owner Patrick Meany’s menu offerings, with artisan pizzas and seasonal foods that emanate from the embers. Anderson Valley: ‘bahl hornin’ in America’s greenest wine country

The Madrones showcases the vision, talents and dedication of its congenial and multi-talented owner, James Roberts. An accomplished artist and professional designer, Roberts swapped the corporate world for this more serene and fulfilling lifestyle, a sentiment echoed by many Anderson Valley residents. With equal enthusiasm, he touts his 30-foot-high compost pile and the windows he salvaged from an old warehouse. He hosts classes on his current passions: food preservation, canning, olive oil production, wine sensory evaluation, cheese-making, birding, mushroom foraging, gardening, natural pest management and farm-to-table cooking.

Just admiring the architecture of the complex, a 20-year labor of love for the owner, could take hours. Throw in a visit to the Sun & Cricket store, selling tools, books, and antiques harkening back to an earlier, more agricultural time, and you may be ready to spend the night. Luckily, you can–there are two separate guest quarters on the property.

Discovering The Madrones in Mendocino County

Discovering The Madrones in Mendocino County

“Blink and you might miss it.” I think those words may have just been coined for The Madrones, located in Mendocino County between Boonville and Philo. Just on my last trip to Mendocino County, I had driven right by it several times and didn’t even notice. Yet I think that’s part of the ambiance that makes The Madrones what it is: Part tasting room, part boutique shop, part gardens, and part accommodations.
